Seeing a dentist in Spain as an expat: how it actually works

If you’ve just moved to the Balsicas, Roldán or Torre Pacheco area, the first thing worth knowing is that dental care in Spain is almost entirely private. The public health system (the Sistema Nacional de Salud) covers very little adult dentistry — usually only extractions and urgent problems — so most residents, Spanish and expat alike, use a private clinic for check-ups, hygiene and treatment.

The good news is that this is simpler than many people expect, and very different from waiting for a referral back home.

You don’t need a referral

You don’t need a GP, a médico de cabecera or any kind of referral to see a private dentist in Spain. You contact the clinic directly and book. For routine care you choose your own appointment; for pain or a broken tooth you ask for an urgent slot.

What happens at a first visit

A typical first appointment is an examination and a conversation. The dentist looks at what’s going on, listens to any concerns, and then explains your options. At Clínica Torralba this is done in English, and you receive a written treatment plan with costs before anything goes ahead — so you can read it, think about it, and ask questions without feeling rushed.

What to bring

To make the first visit smooth, bring:

  • Any recent dental X-rays or reports you already have (a photo on your phone is fine).
  • A list of medicines you take, and any allergies.
  • Your ID (passport, TIE or NIE) — useful for paperwork and invoices.

That’s all you need to get started.

How payment usually works

Private dental treatment is normally paid for directly (out of pocket), and you’ll know the cost in advance from your written plan. Some expats also hold private health insurance with dental cover; if you do, it’s worth asking your insurer what’s included before treatment so there are no surprises on either side.

Which treatments can you get locally?

Everything a family usually needs is available minutes from the golf resorts: hygiene and gum care, dental implants, crowns, dentures and emergency appointments. You can see the full list on our services page, or simply get in touch and describe what you need.
